Dressers, Dresser Bases, & Servers

Dressers & Dresser Bases

Welsh dressers, have become a very popular piece of furniture, used for storing and displaying crockery. Originally intended for the kitchen, dressers have become a popular piece of furniture in the dining room and sitting room. Many call them Welsh dressers but they were also made in Lancashire, Cumberland, the West Midlands etc, as well. Each region had its own style and distinctive features, but this is less relevant these days. We make dressers to order to fit your room, using oak, ash or occasionally mahogany for dresser bases, or sideboards.

Early dressers (from the second half of the seventeenth century) would not have had a plate rack on the top, and would have just been a row of drawers with simple turned legs. As styles developed, stretchers were added between the legs, or cabriole legs were fitted. Today, we often call these dresser bases or servers.

In later years, the bottom part of the dresser was utilised, with cupboards, drawers or a 'dog kennel'.

The overall height can also be varied to suit your requirements. The racks can also have glazed doors placed either side of the shelves, which will display the crockery without the need for frequent dusting.

Four Drawer Dresser

To give you an idea of scale, this handmade, oak, Welsh dresser is 96” long and 84” high.

We have put doors in the top half, or rack, which can be solid wood, or glazed to show off your china, or glassware. Please note that the doors are slightly short of the dresser top. This allows the doors to still be opened, even if you have ornaments on the dresser top.

These dressers are made to order, to suit your needs. We have been known to make them up to ten foot long with four doors and a ‘Dog Kennel’ in the middle.

To give you an idea of scale, this handmade, oak dresser was about 52" long and 85” high.

The open shelves in the centre provide a good amount of display space for plates, etc. The wooden doors flanking either side are perfect for glassware and spirits. Cutlery can be stored in the drawers, ready for special occasions, and larger items of crockery can be kept safe on the shelves in the cupboards.

Glazed Three Drawer Dresser

Glazed Three Drawer Dresser

This example of a bespoke dresser is made in local English ash. The top (or rack) has glazed doors, with glass shelves, to show off glassware. The glass shelves are fully adjustable. The shelves between the doors come with a groove to sit plates against the back of the rack.

To give you an idea of size, this dresser is 60” wide, and 84” high.

We can put an overhang on the back of the top, so that the dresser will go against the wall, even with a skirting board.

Three Drawer Dresser with Dog Kennel

Three Drawer Dresser with 'Dog Kennel'

This bespoke pine dresser was made for a customer who put a dried flower arrangement in the dog kennel.

It measured 66” wide, 80” high and 20” deep.

Six Drawer Dresser & Plate Rack

Six Drawer Dresser & Plate Rack

This oak dresser has three additional drawers in the centre, instead of a cupboard or ‘dog kennel’. The customer wanted extra drawer space for coasters, table mats, and table cloths.

We have now designed a simple drawer system in which wine bottles can be stored, so this can be included in the design if you wish.

To give you an idea of size, this dresser is 72” wide, and 84” high.

Six Drawer Dresser Base

Six Drawer Dresser Base or Sideboard

This is the same dresser as above, with the plate rack removed.

Made in English oak, it measures 72” long, 20” deep, and 34” high. It can be made to any size, and polished to the colour of your choice.

Four Drawer Dresser

Three Drawer Potboard Dresser

This is a copy of a late 18th century potboard dresser, with a plain plate rack. The plate rack can also be made without a back, exposing the wall behind, and making the dresser far lighter in appearance.

This dresser can be made to any size you would like, and we have been known to put a third leg in the centre if particularly wide dressers, with six drawers.

Four Drawer Dresser

Four Drawer Potboard Dresser Base

This is a copy of a late 18th century potboard dresser, without the plate rack. The potboard makes the dresser lighter in appearance and gives more space to display or store larger items. This dresser can be made to any width you would like, with extra drawers and legs if necessary. We can put an overhang on the back of the top, so that the dresser base will go against the wall, even with a skirting board.

Three Drawer Potboard Dresser Base

Three Drawer Potboard Dresser Base

The same as the dresser above, but with three drawers. Three drawer dresser bases are usually between 54” wide to 66” wide. Any less, we make them with two drawers, and any wider, we put four drawers in them. These popular sideboards are usually made in increments of 6” from about 42” up to 108”, 29” high and 18” deep, but we will gladly make them to your requirements.

We often have some standard sized bases in stock, so please just get in touch.

Taper Leg Servers & Cabriole Leg Servers

These more elegant servers are visually lighter in appearance than the potboard dresser base. We can make them in various sizes and alter the number of the drawers accordingly. We can recommend overall measurements, but can make adjusts if any dimension is unsuitable.

We are also able to offer a pad foot server. This is made in the same style as the cabriole leg server, but uses a pad on the bottom of the front legs instead of the cabriole.

All pieces are made using traditional joints, including dovetailed drawers and mortice and tenoned legs, and drawer sides and bottoms are all made in solid wood.

Two Drawer Cabriole Leg Server

Two Drawer Cabriole Leg Server or Console Table

These cabriole leg servers or console tables, are lighter in appearance than the sideboards or dresser bases. We often make these in oak, ash, cherry or mahogany. This is an ideal piece of furniture for the hall, to put a couple of pictures on.

Three Drawer Cabriole Leg Server

Three Drawer Cabriole Leg Server or Console Table

This console table is well suited to the dining room where cupboard space is not necessary, but a serving surface is. These bespoke pieces are made to meet your requirements. We can also make these with turned legs, or tapered legs (see below) without a lower frame or potboard if necessary.

This example was made in cherry, and was about 54” wide. We can put an overhang on the back of the top, so that the server will go against the wall, even with a skirting board.

Two Drawer Taper Leg Server

Two Drawer Taper Leg Server or Console Table

A plainer version of the cabriole leg server. The cabriole legs take more time to carve than the simpler tapered legs, so this becomes a less expensive alternative. This piece was 30” wide and made in locally grown English ash. This console table can be made to the size that you require, and polished to the colour of your choice.

Three Drawer Taper Leg Server

Three Drawer Taper Leg Server or Console Table

This is a larger version of the sideboard above. This console table can be made to the size that you require, and polished to the colour of your choice. This example was 60” long, 16” deep, about 30” high, and made in sycamore.
